It's a small Greenwich-based foundation, but it is changing lives across the nation. Stand For The Troops, previously known as Soldiers For The Truth, was established by the late Col. David H. Hackworth and his wife Eilhys England.

"My husband was Colonel David H. Hackworth, America's most decorated soldier since the Civil War," said wife Eilhys England Hackworth. "He was obsessed with keeping his boys safe."

The late Colonel dedicated his life to the safety of his troops and through the organization the couple has worked to ensure that America's frontline get the best personal combat gear as well as Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) treatment when they return home.

"Every day they are working to protect our way of life, so Stand For The Troops is dedicated to protecting them, both out in the field and when they come home," said Hackworth. "Out in the field to try and help them get the best critical combat gear such as helmets that are top notch, body armor, rifles, and boots appropriate to the climate, mission, and terrain. Increasingly over the last 2 or 3 years we were hearing about the terrible Post-Traumatic Stress when they came home and it became very clear that we should get involved for developing new therapies for PTS."

The organization is now based in Greenwich and the town has played an important role in its development beginning with an event held at the Greenwich Library.

"Around that event I asked people for contributions and the first contribution was from Scott Mitchell at Richard's," said Hackworth. "Then we did a benefit for a number of years [at Richard's]. And every year, right around David's birthday, the First Selectman issues a proclamation proclaiming it David Hackworth Day."

On March 22, the organization is hosting a benefit in Washington D.C. with a musical performance by the Bacon Brothers, the actor Kevin Bacon and his brother Michael.

"I hope that we raise awareness not only with the troops but with the American public," said Hackworth.
