This week is National Public Safety Telecommunicator week.

"That is the person answering the emergency phone line when you call looking for the police, fire, or medical services," said Lt. John Brown of the Greenwich Police Dept.

In Greenwich, these dispatchers field an average of 54 thousand calls per year between, police, fire, and medical services.

"That does not include the calls for information, or the administrative calls they handle," said Brown.

"Storms are probably our busiest. If we have a big car accident on 95, that can get pretty hectic in here," said Erin Boucher, a telecommunicator.

This requires a lot of training. The police department says Telecommunicators go through 12 week training program through the Town that is done to a national standard. Then, they are put on a  6 month probation period. During that time, the new dispatcher works closely with a supervisor to ensure they can do the job safely and confidently.

"This is your world. There's no windows to outside world, their window is a phone and what they can see on tv monitors," said Brown.

The department says that many of the current dispatchers come from an emergency response background and that helps them get the job done.

"I have a pretty good idea of what the officers in the field need to know. Primarily, I want to make sure the officers are safe," said Dwight Straub, a telecommunicator.

Emergency Services personnel say that telecommunicators are essential to keeping the Town safe and they could be the difference between life and death in bad situations.
