After a winter that was rough on the roads, highway crews are planning to fix the thousands of potholes and frost heaves all across the state. The CT Department of Transportation is asking drivers to pay extra attention to work zones and "expect the unexpected".

March 23 through the 27th marks National Work Zone Awareness Week and here in CT, the state's message is "Obey the Orange, slow down for work zones".

The CT DOT reports that an average of 4 people are hurt in a work zone every hour, and over 80 percent of work zone fatalities are drivers and passengers. The DOT suggests obeying road crew flaggers and posted signs, and slowing down when passing through a work zone. They say things such as lanes, speed limits, and sidewalks may change overnight so stay alert. For more on this initiative, visit
