How Much Rest is Best for Concussions?

New study says not as much as you think

Think rest is best when it comes to a concussion? Well according to new research – that’s not exactly the case.

A new study says strict rest for a prolonged period isn’t helpful, and in fact, may do more harm than good.  It’s the newest research in an age-old debate, competing against some doctors’ idea of “cocoon therapy”: a type of treatment requiring several days in complete darkness.

 Eighty-eight patients suffering from a concussion took part in this study, aged 11-12.  Some were told to follow five days of strict rest, including no work, no school and no physical activity.  Others rested for one to two days followed by a return to activity. Those who rested for five days reportedly needed more time for their symptoms to get better and had worse symptoms during the first ten days.   More information is available from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
