Greenwich First Selectman Peter Tesei declared the week of September 15 "Diabetes Awareness Week" in Greenwich. The American Diabetes Association is working with the Town and Greenwich Hospital to bring awareness to the disease that affects over 29 million Americans. The first event was today at Whole Foods.

"What we're doing is just bringing diabetes awareness, we have risk tests that people can take to see if they are at risk for diabetes," said Hope Jayes, the Event Manager at the American Diabetes Association in Fairfield County.

One out of three Americans is pre-diabetic, and 90 percent do not even know they are at risk. This awareness event helps get information to this group of people.

"Primarily, to get them to look and change their lifestyle, ad have a better understanding of what diabetes does to your body if you you into  diabetic state. That's what's most important," said Jayes.

And a registered nurse from Greenwich Hospital is here giving free blood pressure screenings.

"Certainly a risk factor for patients with diabetes or pre-diabetes is heart disease. So, we want to educate on maintaining healthy blood pressure," said Marie Dalton, a registered nurse from Greenwich Hospital.

"Well blood pressure, you need to keep a control over. The number one issue with diabetes can be stroke and heart attack, and one of those checks to do is not just your cholesterol, but your blood pressure as well," said Jayes.

Other events happening this week include a lecture from a Greenwich Hospital diabetes educator at the Library on Monday at 7 p.m., and a "Lunch and Learn" for all Greenwich employees on Friday at noon.
