"People wanted to be a superhero, I wanted to be a firefighter," said Michael Varanelli after being sworn in as the newest firefighter with the Greenwich Fire Deparment.

The Greenwich Fire Department welcomed a new member to their family during a swearing in ceremony on Tuesday afternoon.

Varanelli said, "It means the world to me. This is a huge step in my life - it's the beginning of my life. The beginning of helping people and continuing out what my father did and what my oldest brother does and it just means the world to me."

Varanelli, who is also serving in the Connecticut Army National Guard as a Combat Medic with the 143rd Military Police Company, recently completed a tour in Afghanistan from 2012 to 2013.

First Selectman Peter Tesei said, "This new firefighter having a background serving in our military and having a long standing commitment and service to the fire services is just a terrific addition."

Varenelli says becoming part of another extended family is almost indescribable.

"Spending my time overseas, it's amazing. You can't even compare it to anything else and the fire service replicates it the best compared to the military so I'm extremely ecstatic about it."
