"When I go to college, I know I want to continue my path on community service and just being a great help to my community wherever I go."

Nearly 15 students were recognized for their achievements in volunteerism at the Greenwich Public School's annual Community Service Awards Ceremony in the Parkway School gymnasium on Tuesday.

Board members and principals including first selectman Peter Tesei honored students from elementary through high school.

"In each of our schools there's a service focus all the way up through," said Greenwich Board of Ed Chairman Bill McKersie. "And this program is a way to honor those and really celebrate those."

The school system has hosted the community awards since 1986. Every year the Fleishman Service Award honors a top student recognized for his or her service in the community. This year Greenwich High School senior Jenny Cespedes took that title for her volunteerism at the Boys and Girls Club.

"Now being 17 years old and being able to inspire little kids is such a great feeling so I love being able to be their role models," said Cespedes.

Greenwich Board of Ed Chairman Bill McKersie says the public school system has been growing in its amount of community service, particularly within the town's high schools.

"This year it set records," McKersie said. "It comes all the way forward to what I care about, which is intellectual rigor and civic dedication and that's very rich and real here in the Greenwich schools and also in the community."
