The Greenwich Board of Estimate of Taxation has approved the Town's request of $9.5 million for a new pool at Byram Park.

"The pool project came up because there was a shortage of recreational activities for children," said Cathy Youngman, President of JLG.

"This is a Town of Greenwich project. So we are partners, but very much supporters," said Sue Rogers, project co-chair.

The Junior League of Greenwich is directly involved with the pool portion of this project. It says it has visited between 6 and 8 pools in the Fairfield County area to get ideas.

"We've looked at amenities, things that worked and didn't work. That really informed the design portion of it," said Rogers.

The pool portion is estimated to cost 2.3 million. Unforeseen factors have caused the price tag to go up recently, such as hurricane liabilities and remediation.

"In the fall we discovered there is arsenic where the pool project is being built. The estimated cost of remediation is $1.3 million," said Rogers.

The Junior League says it will help fund the pool project if it passes the Representative Town Meeting.

"Our membership voted in March on giving $250,000 tot he project, and embarked on a  $2.5 million capital campaign," said Rogers.

This is the largest capital campaign the Junior League has ever taken on, but they are not shy to Town improvement projects.

"Previous projects we have worked on have included the skate park, the playground at Bruce Park, Kids in Crisis," said Youngman.

Next, the pool plan will go to the RTM for approval in May.
